Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

If you need any proof that a four-door supercar can actually work then look no further than the Aston Martin Rapide. Why? Well not only does its sleek silhouette pack the same amount of sex-appeal as the Vantage and DB9 but an extra two seats means that you can now pick up even more groupies when sat behind that leather steering wheel. A bona fide babe magnet, the Rapide is also the best Aston I’ve ever driven thanks to a level of intimacy you don’t seem to get in its siblings. Better than the mighty DBS? Yes.

Aston Martin Rapide NY Auto Show

19rapidesilverblonde.jpg

The Aston Martin Rapide took a long time to finally come to market and it seems like it’s taken almost just as long to go on public display. First shown in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show way back in 2006, the Rapide had its world premiere at the Frankfurt Auto Show last Fall. Since then both the LA and Detroit shows have come and gone, with Aston a no-show. Finally, North Americans (or at least New Yorkers) will get their first look at the Rapide when it goes on public display at the NY Auto Show in April.

Review: 2010 Aston Martin Rapide

At $16,667 per cylinder, the new Aston Martin four-door sedan trades space for elegance—and trumps the Panamera in the process

2010 Aston Martin Rapide
Aston Martin would like you to forget a couple of things. First, please erase the 1970s vintage Lagonda from your mental hard drive. After all, it was a separate brand and not mechanically related to its sports cars. Guinness may have been involved. They'll take the mulligan.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads12/0602_naias_02+2007_aston_martin_rapide_concept_open_doors+top_view1200675962.jpg
Next, they'd like you to forget the association you might make with "sedan" and "pragmatism." For their first real sedan, Aston Martin has wisely left practicality to pretense and made the new $199,950 Rapide as stunning as any sportscar it has ever built. It's a four-door for sure—as long as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class—but because it's also lower to the ground than a Ford Mustang, it's not a particularly roomy one.

"Four-door coupe" is how we'd describe it, but even that doesn't convey how low-slung and distinctive the Rapide is. What it gives up in usability, it pays back in sex appeal. There's simply no other sedan as stunning in profile as the Rapide. Jaguar XJ? Far better this time around, 2010 Aston Martin Rapide but no. Maserati Quattroporte? More tailored, perhaps, but nowhere near as gorgeous. Porsche Panamera? Not even close.

2010 Aston Martin Rapide The Aston is pure, concept-car-like—it owes much to modesty. There's not much badging nor much jewelry to clutter its flanks. The glass sits flush with the body sides. The flip-out door handles—on loan from the closely related DB9 coupe—barely break the taut skin of the aluminum panels.

Aston Martin Rapide is available from March

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/upload/22297/images/300x200/01rapidedrivingshot3.jpg
Aston Martin was a traditional car manufacturer about 10 years ago. At that time the British company produced about 600 cars per year – a production number that, everything seems different from glorious. Fortunately, those times seem to be forgotten: Dr. Ulrich Bez, the company then took over steering and has the sports car maker back on track. Annual production now stands at a good 6,000 units per year.

Latest coup for the production of Dr Bez is a four-door sports car. There is no doubt that with this idea they will emulated the German rival Porsche. Even last year brought the Porsche Panamera to market – a sports car suitable for families.

Nine months later, the British are so far the Aston Martin Rapide is in the starting blocks. The four-door based on a very similar concept as the Panamera. Aston Martin has built a sports car, breaking all records whose dimensions. From a sleek sports car can be no question: The Rapide is 5.2 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.99 meters. The empty weight is approximately 2 tons.

So that drives the Aston Martin Rapide, despite the heavy weight like a thoroughbred sports car, it was equipped with a 12-cylinder engine. The V12 engine delivers 477 hp and develops a torque of 600Nm. This force is sufficient to cope in the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds. The top speed is 296 km / h. Information on the fuel made the British have not, but experts familiar with the engine and expect to use about 16 liters per 100 kilometers.

Those who want to grow the four-door sports car that needs to have a bulging wallet. The Aston Martin Rapide is available at dealerships beginning in March.

Aston Martin Rapide Review

Aston Martin Rapide

Day one – Valencia, Spain.

Five years ago Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez, told the six-foot plus Aston Martin Director of Design Marek Reichmann, that he wanted him to build the most beautiful four-door sports car in the world.

Aston Martin Rapide

That’s easier said than done, but if you know Ulrich Bez, you also know that he means what he says.

From what I have seen tonight in Valencia albeit briefly, that job is done.

Aston Martin Rapide

While no one can deny that the accompanying shots of the Aston Martin’s Rapide clearly show the car to be stunningly beautiful, its only when you see it in the metal for the first time, do you realise that the competition may as well pack up their tools and go home.

Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

First Steer Preview: Photos by Nick Dimbleby

Aston Martin Rapide

Valencia, Spain—Now, I don’t want to exert any undue influence on the forthcoming full review of the 2010 Aston Martin Rapide by Anthony Crawford—for that, you’ll need to revisit this space in a couple of weeks time —but here’s what I am willing to admit: About halfway through my time behind the wheel of this very special saloon, I vowed to quit the automotive journalism business.

Aston Martin Rapide

Reason being, I figured I had reached the pinnacle of driving experiences—and there was nowhere to go but down. I was powering along the supremely entertaining roads of the Spanish countryside at ungodly speeds, little to no traffic in sight, relishing the performance of a true driver’s car that offers so little in the way of compromise and so very much when it comes to pure performance and sheer style.

Aston Martin Rapide

Make no mistake: The Rapide isn’t the fastest car on the planet, the most luxurious car on the planet or the most exclusive car on the planet. But it just may be the best all-around car on the planet. At least, that’s where it currently stands on my personal wish list.

Aston Martin Rapide

So, then and there, I vowed to pack it in and pursue another line of work. Until, that is, my co-driver offered the following perspective: “So, if you have sex with your girlfriend and it’s the best sex you’ve ever had, does that mean you quit having sex?”

Aston Martin Rapide

Fair point, I thought, no need to hone the CV just yet. Except now I’m losing sleep. Not over sex, mind you, but rather from devising a scheme that will secure me enough money to afford my very own Rapide.

Amidst a palpable static of expectation, the covers came off the new Aston Martin Rapide at a launch in Jeddah on Sunday. Any new Aston Martin model is worth waiting for; the Rapide however is something extremely special. "I am delighted to tell you that, despite the difficult conditions during 2009, Aston Martin in Saudi Arabia has emerged in great shape," said David MacDowell, Aston Martin's regional sales and aftersales manager at the unveiling.

Aston Martin's splendid Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

If you're a petrol head who enjoys the finer things in life, you're probably already a fan of Aston Martin's first-ever production four-door sports car - the rather splendid Rapide. We certainly are!

First revealed to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Aston Martin Rapide's prices will start from £139,950 when it hits the UK market during the first quarter of 2010.

For those of you not already in the know, Aston's "most elegant four-door sports car in the world" will be powered by a hand-built 6.0-litre V12 engine capable of delivering 470bhp, propelling the car from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 188mph. What's more, all of this power is housed within one of the most stunning exterior’s we’ve seen in a long time. This is definitely the car to watch out for in 2010!

So because we're slightly obsessed with the Aston Martin Rapide - OK, that's a bit of an understatement - we thought we'd indulge ourselves by putting together a gallery of all the very latest images of this fabulous new grand tourer.

Aston Martin Rapide

The Aston Martin Rapide, which goes on sale next year for $200,000 in the United States. The Aston Martin Rapide, which goes on sale next year for around $230,000 in the United States.

Aston Martin brought the first (and only) production configuration version of its Rapide four-door sports car to Manhattan last night. The car was first shown at the the Frankfurt auto show and goes on sale next year.

The 470-horsepower car was displayed in a gray-blue metallic paint amid huge abstract paintings at the Chelsea Art Museum. It arrived in the company of Marek Reichman, Aston’s chief designer.

“I think of a racehorse,” he said discussing the car’s design. “You can sense the power of the horse even when it is still. But when it starts to move you see the play of highlights and muscles.”

Photographs do not do the Rapide justice. There are many subtle lines and planes to its body. A taut “bone” line runs from the side vent and a gentle curve rises over the front fenders. Gray is a traditional Aston color, and the bright blue added to it on this car brings out the subtlety of the body shape. Two lovely greens are among the choices of body colors; a light walnut covers the information processing center.

Aston Martin is taking orders for the $230,000-something car. The company said it planned to sell about 2,000 units in its first year, of which between 25 percent to 33 percent will come to North America. Few options are available. A 1,000-watt, 15-speaker Bang and Olafsen audio system is standard.

The rear seats are heated and cooled. Headroom is generous, but legroom more limited: the average man’s knees will necessarily be angled, not comfortably. And slipping in and out of the seats is not a smooth process despite the clever mechanics of what the company calls “swan doors.”

One option is a set of screens for the rear of the front seats; their side views constricted, the rear passengers will appreciate them. This is in contrast with Porsche’s design of the Panamera, whose rear-seating area is more generous.

“You seem to have chosen grace over space,” someone in the museum observed, and Mr. Reichman agreed. “Every millimeter was considered very carefully,” he said.

Aston Martin Rapide in San Francisco

Aston Martin's Rapide looking right at home in the Palace Hotel

Over the years, San Francisco’s Palace Hotel, the first grand hotel west of the Rockies, has played host to many an international luminary. The morning of the Great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the world-renowned tenor, Enrico Caruso was shaken out of bed in the Palace. So perhaps it is fitting that the automotive world’s latest earth shattering virtuoso was hosted amid the gleaming marble, polished brass and delicately crafted wrought iron lacing the Palace Hotel’s majestic interior.

There, the all-new Aston Martin Rapide looked entirely appropriate blissfully ensconced like the piece of ultra-rare and exquisitely fine art it is. But this is fine art that rolls. Aston’s first four-door since production of the very rare Lagonda sedan ended in 1989, Rapide, at first glance, simply appears to be yet another strikingly beautiful Aston coupe. Upon closer inspection though, a second pair of Aston Martin’s signature swan wing doors reveals themselves.

Francesca Smith, Aston’s charmingly gracious representative explained, in her lovely lilting British accent, this stop in San Francisco is part of a seven-city tour around the U.S. to give potential owners an opportunity get up close and personal with a car most people have only seen in photographs – or at the Frankfurt Auto Show this past September.

“The people coming here today have either already placed deposits for the car, or are very close to making a purchase decision.” said Smith. “This gives them an opportunity to see the car in the flesh, select the color combination they’d like, and just basically reaffirm that Rapide is all they expect it to be.”

And indeed, as I stood there discussing the car with the ever-affable Smith, busy business people wafted in to admire the curvaceous flanks of the stunningly beautiful automobile. One guy announced broadly as he arrived, “ I have seven minutes, what’s the story?” Another group flew down from Western Canada in a chartered jet to bask in the glory of the vaunted automobile.

Smith continued, “ The car goes on sale in June, so this gives our customers an early preview. Right now, this is currently the only production Aston Martin Rapide in the world.”

With that quite firmly in mind, I very gingerly sat behind the substantial steering wheel and looked around.

As to be expected, Rapide is hand-finished in a manner thoroughly befitting its estimated $200,000 price tag. The interior features a combination of blue and bone colored leather complimented by Rapide's lusciously luxuriant walnut and aluminum trim. But just saying that doesn’t quite do it justice, you have to see it to feel it. The compartment looks more like that of a concept car than a production automobile.

Rear seat passengers enjoy video entertainment via monitors placed in the back of the front seats and can benefit from entirely separate programming on each monitor if they desire. Bang and Olufsen provides aural pleasure via 15 speakers placed strategically around the cabin.

A center console, on which reside controls for the climate control functions divides the rear compartment. Additionally, the rear seats are heated and cooled.

The boot (that’s trunk for those of you who are less than fluent in English) is accessed via a hatch that opens to reveal a nicely configured cargo area, one more than capable of handling soft luggage for four (yes, a set of fitted luggage is available). A partition keeps cargo separate from the passenger compartment, or it can be removed to provide even more cargo capacity. Yet another removable partition blocks the view inside the cargo area from prying eyes outside the Aston Martin. The rear seats fold for even more carrying space and Aston provides a cover that can be placed over them to prevent scratches.

Up front, underneath the bonnet (that’s hood y’all), resides the 470-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 engine that can also be found in the DB9 – Rapide’s closest relative in the current Aston Martin lineup. As I couldn’t do acceleration runs inside the Palace, I can’t speak to 0-60 times or how the car feels on the move. But given its 50-50 weight distribution, front mid-engine configuration (the engine is positioned behind the centerline of the front wheels), ultra-smooth and powerful V12, and the fact that it must exist alongside some of the most desirable sports cars in the world, there is no reason to expect the Aston Martin Rapide’s performance to be anything other than well – Rapide.

The Aston will be in Chicago from the 23rd to the 24th of November, Manhattan from the 2nd to the 5th of December, Charlotte, North Carolina from the 9th to the 10th of December, Palm Beach from the 14th to the 17th of December, and Dallas from the 21st to the 23rd of December.

Aston built outside UK

The Rapide model is also their first four-seat model since the Lagonda Rapide in 1961.

So why is the Rapide being built at a factory in Graz, Austria, instead of the firm's state-of-the-art HQ at Gaydon, Warwickshire?

When the Rapide was first planned three years ago there was no prediction of a global recession and Gaydon was working at full capacity.

New models were on the way and there was simply not enough production space at the factory to build the Rapide.

So Aston chose Magna Steyr, a specialist car plant in Graz which already builds models for BMW and Mercedes, with 240 Austrian workers preparing to build up to 2,000 Rapides a year from early 2010.

Aston Martin Rapide Makes U.S. Debut

2010 Aston Martin Rapide. Photos coutesy of Aston Martin

Aston Martin will debut it's new Rapide, the four-door sports sedan today at an exclusive party at the ultra-trendy SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills today.

At the debut, potential customers, media and Aston Martin fans will get a chance to view the Rapide up close and personal before it heads out on a seven-city tour of the United States. The Rapide concept was first shown at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show and in full production form earlier this year t the Frankfurt Auto Show. The Rapide and the Aston Martin "party machine" will travel this winter between Los Angles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, Palm Beach and Dallas before making the return trip to England.

"Rapide is the culmination of the Aston Martin range of sports cars, a car that seals the revival of a truly admired marquee," said Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO. "There is now an Aston Martin for every taste and for every use."

The Rapide is powered by Aston Martin's tried and true 6.0 liter V12 engine. Producing 470 horsepower and 443 pound feet of torque, the car will be no slouch. When mated to the six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic gearbox, expect a 0 to 60 mph time under 5 seconds and a top speed of 180+ mph.

The Rapide is constructed on Aston Martin's VH (Vertical/Horizontal) architecture and shares the same basic underpins as the DB9. The Rapide will be the first Aston Martin built outside of the United Kingdom thanks to a partnership with Magna Steyr.

It goes without saying that the Rapide will compete directly with Porsche's Panamera and Maserati's Quattroporte. But in my humble opinion, the Rapide is certainly the best looking of the bunch. Yes, the Panamera has much more usable and spacious back seat, but is, well... hideous.

Aston Martin design director, Marek Reichman, said this about the Rapide's styling, "There is a real sense of proportion with this car, akin to a tailored suit; the new double grill gives more presence on the road while the iconic signature side strake has been lengthened through to the rear doors to enhance its lateral proportions in a subtle, yet elegant way. The car's purity makes it look right from every angle."

The Rapide will be priced around the $200,000 mark, making it expensive as well as beautiful Aston Martin says it will build between 1000 and 2000 units per year with the first deliveries expected in the spring of 2010.

So Aston chose Magna Steyr, a specialist car plant in Graz which already builds models for BMW and Mercedes, with 240 Austrian workers preparing to build up to 2,000 Rapides a year from early 2010.

SUN MOTORS. KEN FITS A DOOR TO THE NEW ASTON RAPIDE.

Aston have spent the past 16 months replicating their British production operation at their own dedicated factory in Graz, with a small team of Aston specialists training Magna staff, some of whom have travelled to Gaydon for first-hand experience.

The irony is that Aston, like every car firm, have been hit hard by the recession and production at Gaydon has been cut back.

So the Rapide could now have been built in the UK, but the firm had already invested heavily in setting up the Austrian operation.

And having become the first British journalist to have spent a day on the production lines in Graz, I can confirm the factory is an identical replica of the UK plant. The workers even wear Aston uniforms.

KEN IN GRATZ WHERE THE NEW ASTON MARTIN PRAPIDE IS BEING BUILT.

They follow the same meticulous quality control levels and attention to detail, taking a month to painstakingly hand-build each car.

It takes 40 man hours to produce the leather trim for each Rapide and nearly 50 to apply a car's nine different coats of paint. And workers like Wolfgang Mayer, a lead technician on the engine assembly, are clearly proud of the fact they are building an Aston Martin.

Wolfgang spent five months at Gaydon learning the "Aston way".

"We are all very proud of building the Rapide, it's a very beautiful car and the best we've ever built at Graz.

"And we all know that Aston is the favourite car of James Bond."

Helmut Wagner is in charge of Rapide production and he says the model has added some "glamour and excitement" to the production lines and the local community.

"Getting the Rapide model has been great news for Graz and there is a lot of excitement in the factory.

"And now we are testing the car on local roads it is also causing a stir in the city."

Aston Martin importers Independent Prestige expects the New Zealand dollar to be worth upwards of 40 pence for a long time yet - the main reason why it is reviewing pricing for the British-made exotics.

"There are no final numbers but the price of the whole range of Aston Martins is going to be improved," says Independent Prestige general manager Lee Small.

The four-door Rapide, for example, is likely to come in at around $400,000 when it lands here next May/June.

"We are finalising pricing for the Rapide now and it will be a lot better than we anticipated," says Small. "Initially we expected it to be around $450,000 but with the way the British pound has gone, the Rapide will be closer to $400,000."

Aston Martin Rapide from Every Angle

The Aston Martin Rapide from Every Angle
The Aston Martin Rapide was revealed back in September. We've seen it in person, sat in it, and ogled its sharp lines (read our First Look). So what do we have here? Images of the Rapide from every angle, courtesy of Aston Martin. Enjoy.
